Sunday Bird’s Eye View Schedule for 3/4

THU 3/1 (10:30PM) — I swapped the 530,630p games at BHPY so that Lay Up City got their paid request of >630p. Quite frankly we got lucky that this was possible. Look, I am a human being. Therefore, you need to help me out, too. Again, I’m not Superman. In this instance, a check/balance on me would have been Lay Up City looking at the pref1 column and noticing that their tipoff timeframe had not changed to >630p. After all, ding ding ding… that is what I go on! Columns pref1 and pref2 is quite simply THE WAY THAT I SCHEDULE GAMES. So yes, I f-ed up by not even changing their pref1 (or pref2) column accordingly, but this could’ve been avoided long ago if you had just checked and balanced me. AGAIN IN DREAMLEAGUE, IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO. EVERYTHING. REMEMBER THIS.

Aubergine and Run N Gun, you are hereby at 530p (not 630p). Lay Up City vs Team CB is at 630p.

THU 3/1 (9:00PM) — Tipoffs are now finalized below. BGCE director has responded and slightly tweaked the schedule, so I had to juggle some games in SF around. Here’s the immediate jump, or just keep scrolling down. Don’t forget about the discussion about what to do about sandbagging…

THU 3/1 (7:00PM) — Still no word from the BGCE director. I can’t really set any tipoffs in stone because if it falls through, then there could be a domino effect, esp for those of you who are on OAK teams (you know who you are — maybe I need to institute a rule next season of nobody allowed to report an overlap of OAK-SF or vice-versa). If we don’t get those three BGCE games, then I have to figure out which division to delay in SF. I suppose PHHS in SJ is set to go. That gym starts at 4pm. I’ll let you know soon as I hear from the BGCE dir.

THU 3/1 (3:00PM) — Scroll down for the latest and greatest schedule, which is not quite ready. It’s 95% done, but I have to wait on the times for BGCE in SF from the gym director. Again, expect a publish time for this schedule of 7pm tonight. Meantime, let us address a known problem happening in nearly every division lower than AAA (and that’s a lot of divisions)…

Protocol going forward for Handling Sandbagging: Self-Policing Prior to Playoffs

As you can see on the DIVISIONS/TEAMS page when you signed up, I have gone to great lengths to try and make sure each division is “fair” and teams can be built on a level playing field. Some of these include not allowing any NL players to play in REC, not allowing more than 3 impact players of a higher caliber on the same team, and the obvious height restrictions/guidelines. Apparently, that’s not enough.

I have concluded that there are 3-4 reasons why people sandbag:

  1. They are still in the phase of basketball maturity where getting hired help to win outweighs the process of improving and/or learning how to win on your own. [ASIDE: IMHO, this is what made Michael Jordan great. Can you imagine if he had had Pippen and Rodman in his 3rd year? I don’t think MJ becomes as great as he became.] Therefore, these “stacked teams” (as we’ve grown to know them) knowingly, whether consciously or sub-consciously, sign up for a weaker division in an effort to increase the odds of winning a championship. This is usually evidenced by going 5-1 or 6-0 in the regular season with a majority of the wins being blowouts. There may have been some close games, but those are evidenced by DNP’s for the impact players. There is usually a lack of previous experience in doing this in other smaller leagues where the topic of sandbagging has not reached a critical mass.
  2. The divisions available happen to be not fit perfectly. There are too many gray areas. Nothing we can really do about that. It’s like trying to make an NBA Draft class a certain guaranteed level of play. Impossible.
  3. They honestly signed up for the wrong division. When this happens, the team usually has no complaints being moved up to the next level of competition for the playoffs.
  4. A perfect storm of logistical quirks has occurred, not involving any of the above, that forces them to pickup players not particularly suited for the division in question. Crossing the line of winning vs playing for the experience/fun may or may not have occurred.
  5. A combination of the above.

At this point, I don’t think I can lay down anymore rules, put in anymore checks and balances prior to the season getting into full swing, or put anymore strain on my ability to schedule all of this stuff. Therefore, from this point forward, in addition to the foundation of competitive rules that I’ve already set forth on the aforementioned DIVISIONS/TEAMS page, we will embark on…

Voting Teams In Or Out Of Your Division’s Playoffs

From now on, prior to the playoffs, you have the right to email me and tell me that you do not want a certain team in your division’s playoffs. Obviously, a lot of this will occur now, as we rapidly approach the playoffs and you’ve gotten 5-6 weeks to experience what the teams at the top of the standings are bringing to the table.

You will need to explain thoroughly why, in your email. This may require you to have a season’s worth of anecdotes. But what this also does is, it makes you think whether or not it’s really worth the trouble. Because, on the flipside, a lot of you want me to play Superman. You want me to see everything and crack the whip everywhere, and quite frankly that is just not possible. On the other hand, I’m giving you the ability to speak up if you feel strongly about something. It may also spur you to focus on actually trying to beat the team that’s sandbagging, despite what innate advantages they may have had in assembling their team over yours.

Please note, if your email is the only one I get pertaining to your sandbagging situation, that’s not going to be enough. So go ahead and do some behind-the-scenes campaigning if you’d like.

I mean, think about it. If the NBA had this during the Celtics-Lakers old school reign, then maybe they would’ve had more diversity in talent and different champions. Like if the other 18 owners banded together and said, hey, we honestly cannot compete with the Celtics/Lakers and it’s getting embarrassing, can we have two playoffs? (Would’ve been preposterous, but point being, we can do this in rec league where there’s no salaries involved.)

Funny thing is, that’s what the NBA wants now, now that the NFL has proven parity to be a good thing. On the other hand, there are good arguments to say if you’re the old-school Celtics or Lakers, you have every right to keep your dynasty. After all, you built it.

And if I don’t get any emails, then I’ve done my job. I can only assume that everyone is has accepted the hands that have been dealt them.

The result of your emails telling me what’s going wrong about your division, competitive-wise, will yield the following:

  • I might move that sandbagging team up to the next level if hardly anyone in their division is having fun with them in the division.
  • I might split your division into more “fair” separate sub-divisions for the playoffs. Please note, as I offer this, it will cost me more to order more championship t-shirts. But hey, if it makes more people happy, then so be it. I can always raise fees a little bit if this process becomes a solid, agreeable solution across the board.
  • I might not make any changes due to whatever. But at least people will know what’s going on. It will be harder for blatant sandbaggers to hide.

The best thing is, I think now people will make a more concerted effort to put their team in the right division. I’m sure glad we went with a double-elimination playoff format for everyone. It has turned out to be one of the signature qualities of Dream League that sets it distinctly apart from other leagues.

So now, the topic of sandbagging is now ultimately in your hands.

THU 3/1 (8:15AM) — The schedule for this Sun 3/4 will post later this evening by 7pm, probably earlier. We are experiencing some delays related to the need to find 3 extra hours of gym time in SF. We are probably going to get lucky and book BGCE, but it’s complicated. Please stand by. Meanwhile, here’s a very early draft version. SF is NOT in chronological order and OAK/SJ are sort of…
