2011 Fall Sundays Roadmap: NL/AL/AAA-SF

TUE 10/4 (12:15PM) — BluePrint just asked for a doubleheader on 10/9, and with some repeat matchups I wanted to avoid since we’re only in the third week, I revamped the schedule pretty significantly. Not in terms of the matchups which were pre-determined, but in terms of the blocks of games to use each week. I juggled those around to meet the requirements of BluePrint’s dh makeup and not having repeat games too close to each other.

TUE 10/4 (11:45AM) — I forgot to mention that the matchups were carefully done. Here are some of the interesting developments…

  • Rangers vs SF City will, of course, occur twice. But the real issue is, who else do these two play?
  • I put the TorrCats and Problems as the next two highest-ranked teams. TorrCats vs Problems occurs once.
  • TorrCats vs Rangers will occur twice. TorrCats vs SF City occurs once. That covers 5 games for Rangers/SFC.
  • Problems vs SF City will occur twice. Problems vs Rangers occurs once. That covers 5 games for Rangers/SFC.
  • Rangers vs SF Warriors will be the Rangers’ 6th matchup.
  • SF City vs BluePrint will be SFC’s 6th matchup.
  • TorrCats will play vs BluePrint and BCL for their 5th and 6th matchups.
  • Problems will play vs SF Warriors and ABC Hawks for their 5th and 6th machups.

As you can see, in the AAA, the matchups are weighted heavily against the TorrCats and Problems. Next after that, the SF Warriors and BluePrint. But the standings don’t really matter. It’s the performances that will determine placement and structure of the playoffs. Again, as written below, if the Rangers and SF City are clearly head and shoulders above the rest, so be it.

Now, starting this Sun 10/9, the trick for me will be not to have those repeat matchups mentioned above occur too close to each other, since seeing the same team within a span of 3-4 weeks generally results in complaints. But I’ll try my best. No guarantees.

TUE 10/4 (11:30AM) — OK, this is definitely a complicated situation, but let’s make the best of it. First off, we have two “legitimate” NL/AL-caliber teams (due to their size) in the Rangers and SF City. But then I look at the rest of the field in AAA, even across OAK/SF/SJ, and I see that Problems, Marin, and Purefoods border on an AL team. TorrCats could also pass, if all of their talented pieces play to their potential. Then there’s the wildcard: BluePrint (you never know who they’ll bring or whom on their team will stick). So, we’ll just have to mix and match some of the matchups and see what happens.

Let’s say the Rangers and SF City turn out to be head and shoulders above the rest of the “AAA” field. Well, okay, then maybe we just have a best-of-three to determine the best team in the Bay Area. Or maybe I give them a huge discount in the Gold Rush Tournament, when strong teams from out of town will be coming in.

Now, for the AAA teams, if the aforementioned two NL/AL-caliber teams are indeed head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field, then we have six remaining teams that are more AAA caliber — again, we have to see how things play out. After we determine the “regional” AAA championship in our standard double-elimination format (amongst those 6 teams, presumably), we can continue further to determine a Bay Area AAA champion (vs OAK/SJ).

The way we would do this is whittle down the respective OAK (aka AAA-Elite due to the required distinction between AAA-Premier in Oakland), SF, and SJ divisions to their bare championship or repeat championship teams, as close to single-elimination as possible, then create a Final Four amongst the regions. Of course, location would be an issue, but I think I would just pick the cheapest gym available. Please note: I am getting reamed this season by Oakland raising their fees while at the same time losing gyms in SF, which will force me to purchase a more expensive alternative late October. Bottom line, it will be finally worth it to play against a team from another region, since there are only so many teams to begin with. I think it is worth that one-time sacrifice to drive 30-40 minutes.

A lot of this will be play-it-by-ear. It just depends. I have to incorporate league costs into this as well, so I’m not sure how the Bay Area Championship will play out. Is it a Final Four format, assuming there are really four good teams across three regions? Is it a Round-Robin between three teams? We don’t know yet. Let’s see how the teams perform in the playoffs.

Looks like this Bay Area Championship will occur on 12/4.

If teams and their players expect 100% attendance, they should not plan any Xmas vacation until Mon 12/19. Failure to plan accordingly can result in an extra fee for any (championship) games we need to specially schedule for you through 12/18.

If you look at the roadmap closely, you can deduce that future blocks of games (each week) could theoretically be juggled to accommodate a schedule quirk here or there. Should you be concerned with anything you see below, please email wylie(at)dreamleague(dot)org and we will explain or fix it.

In the roadmap below, if you see red text with a line through it, it means that’s where the game was originally scheduled in a “perfect” template. However, special requests can move those games to other dates, such as denoted in bold green, and a series of swaps can occur, but the matchups will always be fixed. The number of red cross-outs should always equal the number of bold green adds.
