2011 Spring-Summer Sundays Roadmap: REC-SF

MON 7/19 (3:15PM) — In case you hadn’t noticed, I had split the playoffs into Upper and Lower. However, I failed to update the roadmap accordingly, so here it is (scroll down)…

5/12 – initial post
6/7 – move Kuya/R&K from 6/12 to 6/19 (Kuya bye 6/12)
6/20 – delete all 7/10 games and rematch SFWR-TmCB for 6/26?
6/23 – move 6/26 Kuya-RNG to Sat 7/2
7/4 – start double-elim playoffs on 7/10
7/5 – upper = 10, lower = 5 for playoffs

MON 7/4 (5:15PM) — So we had the Kuya vs Run N Gun makeup game on 7/2, which afforded both teams 6 regular season games heading into the playoffs for 7/10. We decided to cut the regular season to 6 games with everyone getting double-elimination status, rather than 7 games with only teams finishing .500 or above with double-elimination status. The main reason for doing this is because of the issues with the MDLS closure and the resulting severe shortage of gym space on 7/10. Another reason for going with 6 regular season games is because we had an odd number of teams and one team (probably SFFA) would’ve been left with only 6 games played while everyone else had 7.

Below are some high-level details pertaining to the playoffs that start this Sun 7/10, but first, here are the changes that have been made to the roadmap thus far, with the dates in which the changes were made…

6/23 – move 6/26 Kuya-RNG to Sat 7/2

As we head into the playoffs, please note that we will be splitting the playoffs into an upper and lower division. The upper bracket will consist of the 9 teams that finished .500 and above. The lower bracket will consist of the 6 teams that finished below .500. Think of it as a posthumous way (relative to the regular season which has now ended) of figuring out which of the 15 teams should have signed up for which division had we offered signups for an Upper- and Lower-REC. This also gives the teams that struggled that “fighting chance” for a legitimate shot at a championship. Again, both upper and lower will be entirely double-elimination status.

Please note, per the roadmap below and due to the space limitations on 7/10, the top two seeds in the Lower Bracket will get a bye in the first round. The playoff brackets will be fully explained in a separate post.

THU 6/9 (8:00AM) — Kuyabraddas requested a bye for 6/12 and Rothstein & Kass, their opponent scheduled for that day, agreed to move it to 6/19. This will result in a doubleheader for both teams on 6/19. This has been updated in the roadmap below.

TUE 6/7 (10:00PM) — Latest and greatest, scroll down or click the link to jump to the top of the roadmap below. Nothing new to report. Same old, same old. Team Go has a bye on 6/12 that they requested. Any other issues, let us know.

MON 5/16 (12:15PM) — The team called “1203” will now be known as the Kuyabraddas. The name change is reflected in the roadmap table below. I have also corrected the week-by-week playoff structure. It has a probable 8-team double-elimination Upper Bracket and a 7-team single-elimination Lower Bracket, although as explained previously, the structures will depend on the final standings.

SAT 5/14 (11:15PM) — Here’s the roadmap for the season for REC-SF. Please note, this the first draft and is subject to change, based on any unforeseen circumstances, such as a drastic special request that would cause disruption in the schedule.

With 15 teams, it was easiest on the scheduling to just split it into two conferences, listed below as “e” for Eastern (8 teams) and “w” for Western (7 teams), one playing roughly from about 9a or 10a to 3p tipoffs (could be slightly later than that), the other afternoon to evenings.

The Western Conference, i.e., teams that want to play later in the day, have 7 teams. The earlier teams in the Eastern Conference have 8 teams. That means a team in the Western Conference will take a “natural” bye each week, since there’s an odd number of teams there. Because each team in the Western Conference takes a turn to take that bye, it takes one week longer for the Western Conference to complete its target regular season of 7 games. To make up for that, the Western Conference will play on 6/19, which is the Fathers Day makeup weekend.

Incidentally, I have named the morning to early afternoon teams as “Eastern” conference since the sun rises in the East. So the later afternoon and evening teams will be in the “Western” conference. Remember, when we schedule an east team vs a west team, we have the 3p midpoint rule.

As we head into July 4th weekend, all teams will have played 6 games. The last week is reserved for the East to play the West, according to standings. These will be somewhat difficult to schedule because, as you already know, it will be morning teams vs afternoon teams. But we’ll do our best and I hope teams can be more flexible with their schedules on the last week.

Finally, mathematically, not all 15 teams can play 7 regular season games each. It’s just not possible. So what we will do is, the SF Free Agent team will play only 6 regular season games and take a bye that last week.

The teams that finish .500 or above will get double-elimination status for the playoffs. The teams that finish below .500 will get single-elimination status. The brackets will be separated into separate playoffs. We will have an Upper (double-elim) and a Lower (single-elim). This may not be reflected accurately in the roadmap for the playoffs. It’s getting late (Sat night before an early wakeup call for full slate Sunday games), so I’m admittedly being a little lazy. We should probably have 8 or 9 at .500 or above, then 6 or 7 for the single-elim lower bracket. Right now it’s a copy/paste of a 7 and 7 structure. Oh well, close enough.

You can see I matched up the actual 5/1 and 5/8 matchups to adhere to the structure of the 15-team schedule. There are good amount of teams playing makeup games on 6/19 too. There’s even a makeup game between Serious vs Entourage that needs to be ironed out.

Future blocks of games per week, even this Sun 5/15, could theoretically be juggled to accommodate a schedule quirk here or there. Should you be concerned with anything you see below, please email wylie(at)dreamleague(dot)org and we will explain or fix it.

Remember, in REC here I am trying to do my best to make sure teams are in the right divisions. Mostly you’re not supposed to have teams from a higher division, but that is not always easy to manage. Just try to be transparent. It’s a bit more difficult since we don’t have 30+ teams in the REC like we do in Oakland. Here’s what I wrote for Oakland…

First of all, REC is supposed to be a division where you don’t care if you win or lose. But even if you did “care” (whatever that means), if it means having a “hired gun” take you to the promised land, well, that’s the very reason why we have higher divisions! I implore you to take the challenge of competing on your own. I encourage you to assemble a team whereby you have no idea how you’ll finish, and that it’s the journey that you value, not the destination. And if it turns out that your journey was an easy one, challenge yourself to put a thicker jungle or a taller mountain in front of you to climb. Try getting past it multiple times. Don’t give up. But if you do decide to drop a division, know that you gave the previous division your best, honest effort. I hope you will all find value in such journeys.

If you see red text with a line through it, it means that’s where the game was originally scheduled in a “perfect” template. However, special requests can move those games to other dates, such as denoted in bold green, and a series of swaps can occur, but the matchups will always be fixed. The number of red cross-outs should always equal the number of bold green adds.
