2011 Spring-Summer Sundays Roadmap: A/R-SF

MON 7/4 (4:45PM) — A couple of things recently altered the roadmap for A/R-SF: Left Coast Hoops (LCH) joining the playoffs from AAA-SF where they have been losing every game by an average of 20+ ppg, and the loss of MDLS as an SF gym site. This left 7/10 without enough gym space, and with LCH finishing out their AAA-SF regular season on 7/10, it was best to simply move the start of the playoffs for A/R-SF, which will now consist of 11 teams all with double-elimination status due to a 6-game regular season (even for LCH), to 7/17. Here’s the list of changes made to this roadmap, with the dates on which those changes were made…

5/12 – swap DCR/Brav from 5/8 matchup due to tip conflict
6/1 – expel 4 teams: DCR, Dbkd, High, DFrc; create leftovers
6/7 – move 6/12 BmSq/ESF to 6/26 (ESF bye 6/12)
6/20 – add aaa-sf LCH to playoffs (11 teams all dbl-elim)
7/1 – delete 7/10 games

MON 6/20 (6:45PM) — As announced to all captains by email, there’s a strong likelihood we’ll need to cut the regular season to 6 games and have all teams with double-elimination status for the playoffs, which still results in a minimum of 8 games played. The reason for this is the loss of MDLS as a home gym, and the resulting scramble for a replacement gym.

Also in A/R-SF, the expectation is that we’ll add Left Coast Hoops, a new “rookie” team which is struggling mightily in the AAA-SF. That will give us 11 teams for the playoffs, with all teams with double-elimination status.

I have not yet decided if we will skip 7/10 entirely. It currently still represents the 7th game of matchups in the roadmap below. Expect an official change to 6 regular season games and a decision on whether or not we will start playoffs on 7/10 soon. Also, on 7/10 we have major gym issues.

THU 6/9 (8:00AM) — Due to an impasse with tipoff timeframe and request, the 6/12 Bombsquad vs Elite game has been moved to 6/26, which was previously a bye for Bombsquad. Also, Elite now has a doubleheader on 6/26. This has been updated on the roadmap below.

Here are the changes that have been made to the roadmap since it was created on 5/12…

5/12 – swap DCR/Brav from 5/8 matchup due to tip conflict
6/1 – expel 4 teams: DCR, Dbkd, High, DFrc; create leftovers
6/7 – move 6/12 BmSq/ESF to 6/26 (ESF bye 6/12)

SUN 6/5 (12:45PM) — So I had to expel four teams for non-payment: DC Rebels, Delta Force, Debarkads, and High Rollers. To spare you the details, these are teams that folded and the commish of that league merged them into Dream League, taking responsibility for those four teams’ finances. I don’t need to tell you what happened next.

So that has created a huge change to the schedule. I have tried to rematch all the games based on the 2 teams that stayed and the 4 that got expelled, and I was informed that I did schedule a repeat of Stun Guns vs Bombsquad when the dust settled. Sorry about that. Really, I tried different combinations and couldn’t come up with a different one. That being said, I am going to purposely not match those teams up in the first round of the playoffs.

I hope I managed to not repeat any other matchups. You can tell which ones are the matchups by them being listed as “X vs Y” instead of “X at Y”. Scroll down or click the link below to jump to the top of the roadmap.

Also, in terms of aesthetics, I didn’t make any of the expelled team rematches red with crossout or green because those are more dealing with swaps of existing games from one week of games to another. In this case, I just went with the standard crossout to indicate the old matchup affected by the expelled team, then added the new matchup at the bottom of that week’s games. Hope that made sense.

At the end of it all we’ll still have 7 regular season games per team. That means only teams with .500 or better regular season records will get double-elim status for the playoffs. Teams that finish under .500 will be one-and-done for the playoffs. As is the case in all Dream Leagues, every team makes the playoffs.

You may want to count the number of teams you have in the roadmap below to double-check.

THU 5/12 (7:30AM) — Here’s the roadmap for the season for A/R-SF. Please note, this the first draft and is subject to change, based on any unforeseen circumstances for this Sun 5/15. I should know by tonight if there are any such quirks, such as a drastic special request that would cause disruption in the schedule.

Over the past week, we actually added 6 teams. The DC Rebels’ Noel Gonzales had a league run by his uncle. That league ran into some problems, so they were merged into Dream League. I’ve been assured by Noel that all of the 6 teams are at the AAA-REC caliber and when we housed some of their semifinal/championship games on 5/1, it appeared that way. So that also explains why Noel’s name is on the Rumor Mill with all six teams.

With 14 teams, it was easiest on the scheduling to just split it into two conferences, listed below as “e” for Eastern and “w” for Western, one playing roughly from about 9a or 10a to 3p tipoffs (could be slightly later than that), the other afternoon to evenings. However, with 7 teams per conference, there will be 1 team left over each week to play against the other conference. The point is, not to overburden myself with teams with opposite timeframes playing each other every week.

Incidentally, I have named the morning to early afternoon teams as “Eastern” conference since the sun rises in the East. So the later afternoon and evening teams will be in the “Western” conference. Remember, when we schedule an east team vs a west team, we have the 3p midpoint rule.

With all 14 teams playing each week, that means we finish the regular season with 7 games. Each team will play each of the 6 other teams in its conference for 6 games, and there’s a 7th game, which can be played in any of the 7 weeks of the season, against a random opponent in the other conference.

With a 7-game regular season, that means if you finish .500 or better, you will have double-elimination status for the playoffs. If you finish below .500, you’ll have single-elimination. That yields the 8-game minimum season we have in Dream League.

All of the .500+ teams will play against each other in what should be probably at most an 8-team battle in the Upper Playoffs. The Lower Bracket will be a single-elimination affair and be one-and-done. Both Upper and Lower champions will receive championship t-shirts. This is simply the ebb and flow of seasons. Some seasons, Dream League gets 10 or 11 teams and is forced to have one gigantic bracket encompassing them all. When we have 14 teams, we have enough to split it and make each bracket more competitive against each other. You always want to try and have at least 6 teams in a playoff bracket.

The playoffs structure as shown below is assumed to be split into two separate brackets: 7 Upper double-elim and 7 Lower single-elim. However, there could very well be 8 and 6 depending on how the standings shake out in terms of the number of teams finishing .500 and above and sub-.500.

You can see I matched up the actual 5/1 and 5/8 matchups to adhere to the structure of the 14-team schedule, with the bye requests of Full Tilt (5/15), Bring Protection (6/19, 7/31), and Ball Boys (5/22). The only glaring thing is Bring Protection. 7/31 is deep into the playoffs so we have no choice but to play that by ear. 6/19 is a Fathers Day makeup weekend, and Bring Protection hasn’t been scheduled to play that day. The teams that did not start on 5/8 will have to play on 6/19, btw. But the blindly chosen matchup on 5/1 between Bring Protection vs Bombsquad now results in a bye for both teams on 6/5. This date of 6/5 was chosen primarily to avoid forcing Bring Protection and Bombsquad to miss three weeks in a row later in the season if the 6th block of games (denoted by the “Wk” column) had stayed in the original date slot of 6/26 (6/19 is Fathers Day, 7/3 is July 4th). So I juggled around the blocks of games such that the 6th block of game, and hence the Bring Protection and Bombsquad byes, would be on 6/5 instead. Hope that made sense. The whole schedule is just blocks of games which can be swapped here and there, depending on what’s needed by the matchup slots within the blocks.

Future blocks of games per week, even this Sun 5/15, could theoretically be juggled to accommodate a schedule quirk here or there. Should you be concerned with anything you see below, please email wylie(at)dreamleague(dot)org and we will explain or fix it.

Remember, in AAA-REC here I am trying to do my best to make sure teams are in the right divisions. Most of you teams are refugees from struggling in a higher AAA division, or you were dominant in REC. To maintain the integrity we are striving for, we encourage all teams to limit the tallest player to 6’2″, and only have one such big man at the 6’2″ height in the game at anytime (i.e., you could have two 6’2″ players, but only one may be on the court at one time). The idea is that if you had taller players, your team would’ve signed up for AAA-SF, not A/R-SF.

If you see red text with a line through it, it means that’s where the game was originally scheduled in a “perfect” template. However, special requests can move those games to other dates, such as denoted in bold green, and a series of swaps can occur, but the matchups will always be fixed. The number of red cross-outs should always equal the number of bold green adds.
